Overview

Scaevola coriacea is a low, flat-lying perennial herb in the goodenia family (Goodeniaceae). Its older stems are somewhat woody, and the leaves are relatively far apart, giving the plant a sparse appearance. The succulent leaves of this plant are oval- to spoon-shaped, 2 to 5 cm (0.8 to 2.0 in) long, 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 inch) wide and are smooth or somewhat scaly with rounded tips, with 0.7 to 1.5 cm (0.3 to 0.6 in) leafstalks (petioles). Flowers occur in branched clusters 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 in) long from the point of leaf attachment in groups of one to three “half-flower”-looking lobed flowers, each 2 cm (0.8 in) long, with petals that are yellowish green on the outside and cream-colored within. The dark purplish-black two-seeded fruit is egg-shaped and sparsely hairy, 5 to 10 mm (0.2 to 0.4 in) long and about 5 mm (0.2 in) wide.
