U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Announces Availability of Draft Environmental Assessment for the Legend Lake and Moshawquit Lake Aquatic Invasive Species Treatment and Monitoring

A 30 day public comment period is now open for the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin’s Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) examining treatment options for the control of Eurasian water milfoil and curly-leaf pondweed. The Draft EA has been submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for environmental compliance review, as stipulated by the National Environmental Policy Act.

The proposed project will allow the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin to control Eurasian water milfoil and curly-leaf pondweed on 1,497 acres within the Legend Lake and Moshawquit Lake basins; two of the most populated and recreated lakes on the Menominee Indian Reservation.  Proposed herbicide treatments will improve fish habitat and overall lake diversity, restore native aquatic species and provide improved recreation opportunities.

Comments on the Draft EA will be accepted if received or postmarked by May 12, 2015.

The Draft EA is available on the internet at: http://www.fws.gov/midwest/fisheries/library/GLRI-EA-EWM.pdf
