Shorthead redhorse prefer shallow water and swift currents. They are found in areas with a clean sand or gravel substrate free of clay or silt. Shorthead redhorses are intolerant of pollution and turbid water and thus indicators of good water quality. Their diet consists of larval insects and aquatic invertebrates.
