Old world climbing fern (Lygodium microphyllum) after treatment at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Old World climbing fern can grow horizontally or vertically and reach heights of over 60 feet into tree canopies. This non-native fern threatens sensitive habitats of the Everglades by growing up and over native trees and shrubs, reducing plant diversity and degrading habitats. It is capable of covering large areas, including entire tree islands.
