NADA Corner: Has your “Research Only” Study Been Reviewed By the FDA?

Did you know that before you conduct any research studies in aquaculture that use a drug with no legal route for your proposed use, that you should contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)? The FDA defines the term “drugs” to include articles (other than non-medicated food) intended to affect the structure structure
Something temporarily or permanently constructed, built, or placed; and constructed of natural or manufactured parts including, but not limited to, a building, shed, cabin, porch, bridge, walkway, stair steps, sign, landing, platform, dock, rack, fence, telecommunication device, antennae, fish cleaning table, satellite dish/mount, or well head.

of any function of the body of man or other animals. AADAP reached out to the FDA for guidance on what type of studies would qualify as “research only”. We learned that there is no “research only” policy and that any drug treatments outside of established legal routes of use need to be reviewed by the FDA. This is to ensure that any potential drug use is safe to the animals, the environment, and safe to eat if available for human consumption. If you have any treatments that are being conducted outside of either an approved label, an INAD, or a veterinary prescription, then please contact the FDA at
askcvm@fda.hhs.gov to make sure you are conducting your research legally.
