Wildlife Sanctuary Workshop

Would You Like to Certify Your Yard as A Wildlife Sanctuary? The Northern Virginia Bird Alliance is your local chapter of the National Audubon Society. We work to help Northern Virginia communities enjoy, conserve, and restore nature for the benefit of birds, other wildlife, and people. We sponsor activities that include educational programs, citizen science, conservation initiatives, and advocacy initiatives. Our Wildlife Sanctuary Program helps people create wildlife habitat on their own properties, by planting native plants, removing invasives, and taking other steps to support wildlife. You can make a difference and take pride in certifying your property as a Wildlife Sanctuary. A volunteer Wildlife Sanctuary Ambassador will visit your property for free to advise on habitat improvements you can make, and later, to certify your yard as a Wildlife Sanctuary. When the birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife show up–and they will in response to your efforts– you can apply for certification as a Wildlife Sanctuary. Our motto is, “Let the animals decide.” Learn more about the program here. If you would like to learn more about the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance and the Wildlife Sanctuary Program, please join us on October 5th at 10am at the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Information Center (14050 Dawson Beach Rd, Woodbridge, VA 22191) to meet and talk with the people who manage these programs. You’ll also learn how the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide assistance on maintaining bird-friendly habitat at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It’s free of charge and there is no obligation to sign up for anything. Just come and learn! Free plants will be given out on a first come first serve basis. We hope to see you there!
