Pinckney is 50!

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will mark its golden anniversary with a special community celebration honoring five decades of wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and migratory bird stewardship. The free public event will take place from 9:30-4pm (gate opens at 9am) on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the 4,053-acre refuge located between Hilton Head Island and the South Carolina mainland. The gates will open at 9:00 am for a rare drive in opportunity.  The event is free and provides fun, educational activities for all ages and interests.  And...FOOD TRUCKS!

Anniversary event highlights include:

  • Musical Performance with Interactive Songwriting - Award-winning children's musician Roger Day has devoted his life to making sure that future generations sing loud, jump high, and most importantly, dream big. Learn about nature through his Marsh Mud Madness music and gain an understanding of the art of songwriting.
  • Historical Tours - Exploration of the island's fascinating past, from prehistoric settlements to plantation era modern conservation.
  • Bike Tours - Cycling excursions along the refuge's scenic trail system; limited adult-size bikes provided or you may bring your own.
  • Guided Bird and Butterfly Walks
  • Live Bird Demonstrations - learn about a variety of birds with a close-up experience.
  • Family Fun Walk - Take the 1.5 mile adventure and enjoy some interactive animal activities along the way.
  • Nature Yoga - Start the morning off with a peaceful union and harmony between the mind, body, and spirit.
  • Nature Photography Walk - enjoy a guided hike while learning a few tips and tricks for capturing wildlife images.
