Help us celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week (October 11-17) at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge with this special session of Nature Journaling at the Refuge. In conjunction with Write Out 2026, an annual celebration hosted by the National Writers Project, refuge volunteers and nature journaling instructors Beverly and Gary will help visitors to "Write Where We Stand," the theme for this year’s Write Out. It "centers on writing in places that shape and sustain us."

We'll be combining nature journaling practices (with a focus on writing) with an introduction to the Hawaiian practice of Kilo. Kilo means “to watch, observe, examine, or forecast.” We'll also draw on inspiration from the poet Ted Kooser. Our Write Out celebration will include hands-on journaling in this beautiful place. Weather permitting, we will spend time outdoors immersed in the magic that is the refuge.

This special Nature Journaling session will take place October 17, 2026 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. and is free with your paid admission to the refuge. Materials will be supplied, but bring your own writing supplies if you prefer. Dress for the weather, as we hope to spend some time outdoors. We will meet in the auditorium, located in the visitor center.
