Bell Island Pier and Road on Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge are closed to all public accessfor the replacement of the decking and railing of the pier. Several storms have affected the pier over the past few years, and it is time to replace the top portion of the structure to make it a safe place to fish and observe the beautiful scenery. This project will also extend the ramp of the pier further into the parking lot, improving access during periods of minor flooding. Unfortunately, this work will require a temporary closure of the area. Due to construction delays, the contractor estimates construction will last through July. Updates on progress and closures will be posted periodically on the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex Facebook page and on the refuge website. July 17th Construction Update
Replacement of the decking and railing on the pier is progressing. Currently, the contractor estimates construction will last through July, with an anticipated opening date in early August.
July 30th Construction Update
We are pleased to share that the Bell Island Pier on Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge is nearing its anticipated reopening! Construction crews are completing the final touches on both the pier and the new ramp and improvements to the parking lot are expected to be completed by the end of the day Friday. If everything proceeds as planned, the pier will be open to visitors starting the morning of Saturday, August 1st. Please remember that access to the pier is limited to daylight hours only.
