The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alaska Region, supports Alaska Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Week, May 3-9th, 2010. Joining with other State and Federal fire agencies, the Service encourages the public to be proactive in preparing for and preventing wildfires throughout Alaska, and especially in and near our National Wildlife Refuges.
Lightning-caused fires are part of a natural process that maintains healthy forests and wildlife habitat in Alaskan ecosystems. However, unwanted human-caused fires present real risks to Alaskans. Fires caused by various human activities occur each year, commonly near towns, villages and communities where homes and businesses are located close to undeveloped lands. The proclamation of the 2010 Alaska Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Week, signed by Alaska Governor Sean Parnell, states that “the proximity to a fire-prone area and the population level of a community dictates the level of necessary preparedness for unwanted wildfires.” The full proclamation can be read at: http://forestry.alaska.gov/pdfs/firewise09.pdf"color: #231f20 or on the national FireWise site: http://www.firewise.org"color: #231f20. You may also contact your nearest National Wildlife Refuge or stop by any Refuge visitor center. For more information, visit www.fws.gov/fire.
The interagency firefighting community thanks you for the work you do to prevent and prepare!
