Celebrate the arrival of spring, and welcome Anchorages returning migratory bird species, at Migratory Bird Day at the Zoo on Sunday, May 22, at the Alaska Zoo, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host this years International Migratory Bird Day event in partnership with the Alaska Zoo, Bird Treatment and Learning Center, the Anchorage Golf Course, the AACA Medallion Foundation, and KTUU-TV. The Alaska Zoo is offering reduced admission prices all day ($6.00 per adult and $4.00 per child) in honor of the occasion. Furthermore, in what has become one of the highlights of International Migratory Bird Day events in Anchorage, a once-wounded bald eagle, nursed to health by Bird TLC, (Bird Treatment and Learning Center, see their website at: http://www.birdtlc.net/) will be set free to fly again. (Attendees will be able to enter a drawing for a chance to release the eagle! The release will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Anchorage Golf Course) The staff of Bird TLC will also have live education birds on display and will be available to answer your questions
Of course, a wide variety of additional activities (including the popular "Loon Ranger" program and a childrens arts and crafts tent) will also be available throughout the day, home-made ice cream will be on sale, and the zoos snack bar will provide additional refreshments. Furthermore, all visitors will receive a free raptor silhouette to help prevent birds from accidentally striking windows.
