MOIESE, Mont. – Today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) announced the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment for the proposed construction of replacement facilities to administer the Northwest Montana Wetland Management District (District).
On December 27, 2020, the president signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. Division DD of the law contains the Montana Water Rights Protection Act, Section 12, which restored the National Bison Range (NBR) to federal trust ownership for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). The restoration includes the transfer of land, facilities and equipment during a two year period as established by the legislation.
The Service will continue to maintain responsibility to administer units of the National Wildlife Refuge Systems in northwestern Montana. In the past the District was managed out of the NBR, but with the restoration replacement facilities for the management of these areas are needed.
To plan for these needs, the Service has prepared a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed construction of new facilities to administer the Northwest Montana Wetland Management District. The Service is requesting public comment on the draft EA from September 28 through October 27, 2021. Comments can be submitted by email to: FW6NorthwestMontanaWMD@fws.gov or by mail to: PO Box 6 Charlo, MT 59824.
