Chula Vista, CA – Ushering in an era of digital engagement and outdoor fun in South San Diego Bay, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in partnership with the Living Coast Discovery Center is launching two interactive game apps, both in English and Spanish. The public is invited to attend a launch event at Sweetwater Marsh on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., where staff and volunteers will be personally guiding visitors on how to use the app. There will also be interactive activity stations on the refuge trails. This app is free to all, thanks to funding from the USFWS SoCal Urban Wildlife Refuge Project.
Called “Discover Sweetwater” and “Discover South Bay,” these apps will teach visitors about the diverse wildlife that make the San Diego Bay such a vibrant and important ecosystem.
Developed by Discover Nature Apps, an award winning app developer, the apps include GPS-guided nature-based scavenger hunts; the ability for users to post and view real-time sightings and photographs worldwide; and the opportunity to share their experiences on social media. People can compete against one another, or families can opt to work as a team. English sightings will be automatically translated to Spanish, and visa versa, making these apps the first of their kind.
“With these innovative apps, we can reach exponentially more visitors and residents with a fun and interactive experience that leaves them with a greater awareness and appreciation of San Diego Bay’ natural wonders,” said Chantel Jimenez, environmental education specialist for the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
“By providing a new avenue of learning through personal technology, this app allows guests to explore wildlife at their own pace and provides a fun, individualized experience, while also educating guests on the importance of wildlife and conservation.” Said Ben Vallejos, executive director, Living Coast Discovery Center.
To download the apps, visit either the Apple App or Google Play stores, download “Discover Nature Apps,” then select Discover South Bay and Discover Sweetwater modules from “Available Sites” within the menu.
