U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Seeks Public Comments on Proposed Shoemaker Marsh Property Disposal

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking public comment on a draft environmental assessment (Draft EA) regarding Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) proposed “Frank Shoemaker Marsh Property Disposal.”  Public comments will be accepted for a total of 15-days

The NGPC is proposing to dispose of 1.63 acres of property in the Frank Shoemaker Marsh in order to improve an existing roadway that does not meet the design standards for the current or future traffic volume. The property was originally purchased with State Wildlife Grant (SWG) funds for the recovery and preservation of saline wetlands and the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle.  The City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department currently owns and operates the property.  The NGPC has determined that the proposed action will not affect the purpose of the Frank Shoemaker Marsh.

A State Wildlife Agency is required to request Service approval prior to the disposition of real property that was purchased with SWG grant funds.  The Services’ decision to approve or disapprove the proposed disposition constitutes a federal action subject to the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), as amended, and requires the Service to prepare a Draft Environmental Assessment to analyze the effects of the proposed action.  We have prepared this Draft EA and are providing it for public review and comment pursuant to NEPA requirements.

A copy of the Draft EA, which includes details of the proposed action and the alternative considered, is available online by clicking on the title of the document at http://www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/federalassistance/nepa/index.html. Those without internet access may request copies by calling the Services’ Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program at 303-236-4414.  Comments will be accepted until November 12, 2013 and should be sent to: Chief, Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, P.O. Box 25486, Denver, CO, 80225.
