Anchorage, AK—Twelve posters and 12 pieces of literature were chosen to be published in the 2015 Migratory Bird Calendar. Works by the grand prize winners, second grader Sienna Hines of Adak and twelfth grader Jaden Nethercott of Barrow, were selected to grace the cover.
The Alaska Migratory Bird Calendar Contest is an annual state-wide poster and literature competition that engages youth from across the state in art and learning about migratory birds. This year’s theme was “Super Seabirds,” and more than 1,100 entries were submitted from schools in 37 communities in western, interior and northern Alaska. Students learned, wrote literature, and created posters about seabirds. In addition to the student art and literature, the pages of the migratory bird calendar include information on what the public can do to contribute to conservation of migratory birds. The calendar is distributed for free to over 100 villages in the regions that participate.
