This picture nicely illustrates the open nature behavior of grizzly bears. Grizzly bears are an open plains, meadows, and foothills creature by nature and are not solely relegated to deep forests as is sometimes thought. This sow and her cubs are feeding in the open on the shores of Lower Red Rock Lake. Although rarely seen due to their reclusive nature, Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge has a healthy population of grizzly bears in all of its riparian, grassland, sagebrush-steppe, lakeshore, and forest habitats. When visiting the Refuge, please Be Bear Aware. Photo by Cortez Rohr/USFWS.
