Water control structures like this one installed at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia and North Carolina plug old man-made ditches and allow the swamp to hold water once again. The structures were installed to "rewet" the peatland swamp after loggers and others drained it starting in the 18th century.
