U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees stock Tyee Springs, the main water source for Carson National Fish Hatchery, with YY male brook trout. Brook trout, which are native to the Eastern United States, have invaded western lakes, rivers, springs, and streams, potentially imperilling native fish species such as Pacific salmon and steelhead trout. The Service and partner agencies and organizations are using YY brook trout males (males with two Y chromosomes) in an attempt to eradicate populations of invasive brook trout such as the ones that currently occupy Tyee Springs.
