Water purchases for Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge began in 1990 after Congress directed the Service to acquire enough water to maintain 25,000 acres of wetlands in Northern Nevada’s Lahontan Valley. This year the Service acquired 2,278 acre-feet of water for $3,975,715, a substantial contribution towards that goal. Funding came from the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
