While the Stephens' kangaroo rat includes the word “rat” in its name, this species is actually in the pocket mouse family. In 1988, the Stephens’ kangaroo rat was listed as federally endangered, due to loss of habitat from encroaching development. Now, the species is found only in the grasslands of two counties in Southern California: San Diego and Riverside.
