A red-naped sapsucker is perched on an aspen limb at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. As tree sap begins to flow and new leaves emerge in spring at the Refuge, these birds can often be found on aspen trees as they drill tiny holes in the cambium layer to access sweet tree sap.
