The northern spotted owl is one of three spotted owl subspecies native to Pacific Northwest old growth forests ranging from southern Canada to the Klamath region of northern California. The northern spotted owl is classified in the family Strigidae, genus Strix, and is a medium-sized dark brown owl with large dark eyes.
