Mike Bartlett Oral History Transcript

Mike describes learning to hunt and fish as a youth in Rhode Island, his service in South Korea, his first job in Animal Damage Control in Ohio. After three years, he returns to the east coast and learns about wetland permitting by implementing the newly passed Clean Water Act. He also develops close professional relationships with the State and other Federal agencies. His position on Liberty State Park gets Mike moved to the Regional Office, where he provided developed annual work plans and provided support to regional Ecological Staff and project leaders. After serving as Deputy Assistant Regional Director, Mike describes some major issues in his last position – his “dream job” in the New England Field Office. Mike retires in 2008 but ends up working for 9 years as the president of New Hampshire Audubon. After his second retirement in 2017, Mike gets involved with conservation groups and is elected to the board of the National Wildlife Foundation, representing New England. In between all that, he manages to get in some hunting and fishing with old friends.
