Facing south from the White Mountain Research Center. The center contains a population of Long Valley speckled dace in a research pond. Long Valley speckled dace is currently a petitioned species for listing. This small fish is currently found in only one location within the Long Valley Caldera near Mammoth Lakes, CA. While previously distributed throughout the caldera, all but one population of the species has been extirpated from its historic habitat. Long Valley Caldera is one of the largest calderas in the world and was formed around 760,000 years ago. Threats to the species include nonnative predatory fish and loss of habitat.
