Laysan Island encampment destroyed

A tsunami generated by a powerful earthquake off the coast of Japan struck Laysan island late on Thursday, March 10th and continued for the next few hours into the early morning hours of March 11th.All staff are safe. This work site was vacated as employees received warnings and went to higher ground. 4 USFWS & 3 National Marine Fisheries Service employees were later evacuated with the considerable assistance of the NOAA vessel Hi'ialaki on March 14th.
