Bighead carp are silver in color, no scales on head, no barbels on nose, low set eyes, downward slanting mouth, dark blotches along the back and a keel that extends partway along belly. Black carp are darker in color with large scales, no scales on head, a pointy shaped face and teeth that look like human molars. Grass carp defining characteristics include olive-brown or silver in color, no scales on head, large scales and eye centered on a flattened head with an oblong body. Silver carp are silver in color, no scales on head, no barbels on nose, low set eyes, downward slanting mouth, small scales and a keel that extends to the throat.
