The Penobscot is one of the largest watersheds in New England; the removal of the Veazie and Great Works Dams and the implementation of a fishway at Howland Dam were three massive projects at the center of building a more-open Penobscot for salmon and alewife to swim upstream. After the removals, nearly 19 dams remain on the river in some stage of restoration, removal, and relicensing.
