Habitat conditions prevailed across much of the important Missouri Couteau region in North Dakota

At the time of the Survey, northern North Dakota near the Saskatchewan border had received slightly below-average precipitation since the fall of 2025. Though not considered to be in a drought condition, many wetland basins were dry or substantially drawn down and conditions were considered fair for breeding waterfowl, May 2026.
