Original caption: Great Horned Owl, also known as Desert Horned Owl. This owl fledgling flew from his nest above the water, swam fifty feet (using his wings) then pulled himself up on to this scrub. Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, though located in the desert, has a large marsh and these desert owls had chosen to nest above the marsh. Near Yuma, Arizona, June 1949.
