In a room filled with awards for lifetime achievement, wetlands conservation leadership and contributions to endangered species recovery, a single, small photograph appears, tucked in amongst a group of family portraits. The tiny, black and gold framed image is of Florence and her husband Philip on their wedding day in 1944. She pauses. He was a naval officer, she said, and the photo was taken at a restaurant immediately after they were married at the San Francisco courthouse.
