A closeup view of a fanshell mussel found in the Ohio River near Williamstown, WV. On June 21, 1990 the fanshell was designated as endangered throughout its entire range in Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. A recovery plan addressing the fanshell was approved in July 9, 1991.
