U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff and volunteers look at debris and derelict lobster traps washed ashore Hart Island, part of Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. A cleanup in August 2023 removed more than 9,000 pounds of derelict lobster traps, more than 550 pounds of plastic rope and 1,600 foam buoys and plastic bottles from Hart Island.
