After noticing a rapid population decline, scientists found the once widespread American burying beetle clinging to the edges of its range in the 1980s — on an island off the coast of Rhode Island, and in a few counties in Oklahoma. They later discovered the beetle was holding on in parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Arkansas as well. USFWS
