This photo from 1949 shows invasive common carp being removed from Lake Mattamuskeet with nets as part of a historic ecosystem restoration project. The removal, in conjunction with predator stocking and blocking carp re-entry to the lake, was very successful. Native submerged aquatic vegetation thrived in the lake for more than 60 years until it began declining once more in the 1990s.
