The Salmon Creek Unit will stay open until 8:00 p.m. Come for a walk along the Shorebird Loop during the evening hours.
Join us at the Visitor Center, 1020 Ranch Road in Loleta, at 5:00 pm for a free Ivy Basket Making Workshop with Adrian and Carl Klarner of Redwood Invasive Plant Eradicators (RIPE)
English ivy is a plant native to Europe. In North America it presents a threat to native plants and ecosystems because it can form a dense ground cover, smothering other plants. It also climbs trees and can choke the tree by severing the layer of tissue below the bark that transports nutrients. Dense infestations add weight to trees and can make them topple.
Ecosystem restorationists in Northern California and across North America remove, or at least strike a blow against, English ivy in order to restore natural diversity in native habitats.
One thing to do with all the eradicated ivy is weave baskets. This free workshop will introduce you to some basic designs and provide resources for further crafting.
In preparation for the workshop, you can join a volunteer workday and help eradicate some English ivy. Visit https://www.riperadicators.org/ for a schedule of upcoming events.
