The annual Columbia Area Earth Day Festival sees a wide variety of eco-friendly vendors educating the public about sustainable practices, promoting green energy options, recruiting for various volunteer groups, and providing a call to action on political issues. In addition, many vendors are proud to display and sell their earth-themed arts and crafts, as well as locally grown fruits and vegetables, and several wildflowers, herbs, and trees.
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service organized a booth on Eco Avenue, which was a collaborative effort between the Missouri Ecological Services Field Office and Big Muddy National Fish & Wildlife Refuge. Biologists displayed live animals, including aquatic herpetofauna, fishes, and invertebrates. They also presented an interpretive sensory box activity and distributed native wildflower seed packets, posters, educational brochures and customized Earth Day and pollinator-themed buttons. 10,000 people estimated to have attended the event.
