Recently Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery hosted the annual Reaching for Rainbows Special Needs Fishing Derby. Following the Catch a Smile Senior Derby the previous day, this two-day event completed a very busy and exciting week for hatchery staff! Over 300 participants from Russell, Adair, Clinton, Wayne, Cumberland, and Casey County, KY schools loaded the buses and headed to the hatchery for a fun-filled day of fishing, food, and giveaways! Volunteers were stationed at Hatchery Creek where students were equipped with fishing gear and aided in reeling in some nice catches!

After a few hours of fishing, anglers were provided lunch and each student was given a commemorative t-shirt and medallion. Some of the schools were lucky enough to take their fish with them, as teachers volunteered to show the students how to filet and cook the fish! This event would not have been possible without the numerous sponsors and volunteers that donated their time and money to ensure these new anglers had a great day outdoors!
