Once common, the Short-tailed Albatross was hunted for its feathers, meat and eggs, and was eliminated from its range except for a small cluster of Japanese islands. In 2011 a pair of short-tailed albatross nested on Midway for the first time and successfully fledged a chick. The next year five short-tailed albatross, including this subadult, were seen on the atoll.
