McNary National Wildlife Refuge to Host Hunting Blind Preparation and Nature GeoCaching Events
McNary National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting two events on Saturday, September 10, 2011, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hunters interested in the waterfowl hunting program at McNary are invited to participate in Hunting Blind Preparation Day. Those wanting to hunt for nature's wonders are invited to a Nature Geocaching event.

"Your help is needed to prepare the refuge hunting blinds for the upcoming waterfowl season," said Refuge Manager, Lamont Glass. Work will include camouflaging and repositioning blinds, clearing weeds and unwanted vegetation growth from around the blinds, installation of new signs, and litter clean-up. Please bring gloves, boots, waders and tools to work on the blinds. The refuge will have some tools on hand, but weed eaters, hammers, hand saws, clippers and pruners will be needed. Please bring 1/2-inch crescent wrenches and pliers to aid in mounting signs.

To participate in Nature Geocaching, you may use one of the refuge's limited supply of GPS units, or bring your own. Armed with a GPS unit and a set of clues, you will find 21 of nature's treasures along the nature trail.

Participants for both events will meet at McNary Environmental Education Center. The Center is located at 64 Maple Street in Burbank, WA. From the Tri-Cities, go east on I-182 and US Highway 12 to Burbank. At the Humorist Road stoplight (the second stoplight after crossing the Snake River), turn left. Take the next left on Lake Road and travel 1/2 mile to the headquarters building. For more information, call 509-546-8300.
