Fish and Wildlife Service Honors Heroes of National Wildlife Refuge System

Two individuals and a television production company last week received "Refuge Hero" awards in recognition of their substantial contributions to the National Wildlife Refuge System.

At a Capitol Hill reception in honor of the refuge system, awards were presented to George Berklacy, who has aided the system in developing a strategic communications plan for its 100th anniversary celebration in 2003; Ruth Stanbridge, a longtime advocate for the system and for the first national wildlife refuge national wildlife refuge
A national wildlife refuge is typically a contiguous area of land and water managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service  for the conservation and, where appropriate, restoration of fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.
