In Georgia, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service promotes the use of prescribed fire as a management tool to help restore or mimic historical fire regimes in fire-dependent ecosystems that were present prior to European settlement. These ecosystems, which include longleaf pine forests, have undergone significant structural changes and species composition over the last century due to fire exclusion and other land use impacts. The Service works with numerous cooperators as part of Georgia’s Interagency Burn Team, which includes The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Forestry Commission and State Parks, Prescribed Fire Councils, Jones Ecological Center, U.S. Forest Service and other partners to share staff and equipment resources to accomplish important prescribed fire goals throughout the state.
