Bull moose eating Coyote Willow on Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. By late August, this bull moose (Shiras) antlers are nearly full grown. The blood supply to the antlers will slow and eventually stop, causing the antlers to harden into bone like material. The velvet covering the antlers will then be rubbed off by the bull. This bull was feeding on Coyote willow along the banks of the Green River. The word "moose" is derived from the native North American Algonquian Indian word meaning "twig eater".
