Refuge Connections: Wetland Exploration

DeSoto and Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuges are starting a new program series called Refuge Connections. This Thursday evening program will be held once a month and is geared towards providing family-friendly programs that connect visitors to some of the current highlights and happenings of the wildlife, habitat and management of the refuges. The program provides participants an opportunity to learn more about the refuge and ask staff questions regarding the current management activities. The programs are also a great way for individuals to discover how they can get involved with their local refuges through volunteerism or joining our Friends Group organization. The Friends of Boyer Chute and DeSoto National Wildlife Refuges sponsor these programs and will provide snacks, refreshments, and all necessary supplies. The first Refuge Connections program is a Wetland Exploration and will be held on Thursday, March 28th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. During this program, participants will explore some of the refuge wetlands to discover the diversity of migratory birds that benefit from the wetland management on the refuge. Participants will be able to get their hands wet using dip nets to explore the abundant macroinvertebrate life in a wetland. We will also show the tools needed to properly manage wetlands on the refuge and how the drought has impacted our management ability. These programs are free to attend but we do require pre-registration so we can ensure proper transportation and supplies. To sign up or learn more, contact Park Ranger Peter Rea at 712-388-4803 or peter_rea@fws.gov. Keep an eye out for future Refuge Connections programming which will include topics such as Eagle Nest Exploration, Prescribed Burns as a Grassland Management Tool and Managing DeSoto Lake.
