A California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) perching on a dead snag above its nesting site near Los Angeles. "The old pine where the condor perched had fallen to decay. An automobile road now curves up the mountain above Eaton Canyon. The condor family pictured in these pages have taken their place with ancestors of Pleistocene times, their epitaph is written - will this be the epitaph of the species?" William Finley 1927. Part of the Finley and Bohlman collection scanned from glass slides made in 1906, provided courtesy of the Bird Alliance of Oregon.
