Young California condor chick (Gymnogyps californianus) Finley and Bohlman had seen hatch at a nest near Los Angeles. "He was scantly clothed, for behind his little wings the flesh was bare and his belly was bare; while the rest of his coat was down of pure white, to which albumen of the egg was still sticking.. beside him lay the shell of the egg from which he had emerged no many hours before.. how lucky we were to see him at birth!" -William Finley. Part of the Finley and Bohlman collection scanned from glass slides made in 1906, provided courtesy of the Bird Alliance of Oregon.
