Black-necked Stilt

Black-necked stilts (Himantopus mexicanus) are described by Cornell Ornithological Lab, All About Birding, as having "the second longest legs in proportion to its body, exceeded only by flamingos." Currently, black-necked stilts may be seen on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, wading in and along the edge of ponds and the sound. Some of the stilt's diet consists of frogs, brine shrimp, tadpoles, fish, crayfish, beetles and grasshoppers.
