Volunteer Opportunities

Seed Collection 2018

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available on the refuge!

Biological Projects:

  • Garden Assistant – Help with weeding and keeping invasive species out of our butterfly/pollinator gardens
  • Invasive Species – Remove a variety of invasive species
  • Seed Collection – Collect seeds from prairie grasses and forbs


Community Outreach:

  • Festivals and Off-site Events - Assist urban outreach staff with educating diverse audiences in the community about the refuge and the natural world
  • Fishing in the Neighborhood – Assist urban outreach staff with fishing programs located at neighborhood lakes
  • Nature Smart Library Program – Lead nature programs at Nature Smart Libraries throughout the Twin Cities


Community Science Projects:

  • Nature’s Notebook – Track seasonal changes of plants & animals on our Phenology Trails
  • Project FeederWatch – Watch/count winter birds coming to our feeders



  • Painting – Assist the refuge with painting projects. May include kiosks at trailheads or walls in our Education and Visitor Centers
  • Trash Clean-ups – Help the refuge with cleaning up trash/litter


Visitor Services:

  • Environmental Education – Assist staff with small group activities during environmental education programs for students in grades K-5
  • Interpretation – Lead programs educating visitors about the refuge and the natural world. Create your own, or use one of our templates
  • Special Events – Help with a variety of special events held on the refuge
  • Trail Ranger – Hike our trails and report on conditions and visitor activities
  • Visitor Center/Nature Store – Greet and interact with the public at the information desk. At our Bloomington Education and Visitor Center, provide retail support for Refuge Friends, Inc. (RFI) in the Nature Store
