Wetland Resources: Hawaii

Wetlands constitute less than 3 percent of the state of Hawaii but have had a major economic effect on the development of Hawaiian society both before and after European contact. Native Hawaiian communities depended on wetlands for cultivation of taro and other staple food crops and for coastal fisheries.
