Kids, adults, and families from all around joined Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery staff and volunteers for a day dedicated to appreciating and protecting our amazing planet! The energy, curiosity, and smiles throughout the day made the event truly special.
The interactive and informational booths kept a steady flow of eager attendees exploring the hands‑on activities, asking questions, and learning more about the natural world. The Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife’s “Animals of Kentucky” exhibit gave visitors a chance to learn about the region’s biodiversity with several furs, skulls, etc. displayed. Visitors explored the aquatic world through the Division of Water’s macroinvertebrate booth, where they got a firsthand look at the tiny creatures that serve as indicators of water quality right here in Hatchery Creek! The Division of Waste Management and Division of Air shared insight on the services they preform to protect our environment and how they can help community members and landowners.
Gunnar's Bees gave a detailed presentation on the importance of bees, their life cycle, role in pollination, and instructed attendees on how to do the iconic "waggle dance" performed by foraging bees to communicate resource location to others in the hive! Staff from Russell County Public Library provided sensory ecosystem bins, allowing kids to craft their own jungle or ocean ecosystem using supplies macaroni noodles, sand, and animal figurines. Blow-up archery, temporary tattoos, and live demonstrations kept the fun going throughout the day.
A huge thank you to our wonderful partners and volunteers, without whom we could not host engaging events such as these! Another big thank you to the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. who generously sponsored the event, provided lunch for our partners, and free Chestnut Oak and Washington Hawthorn tree seedlings to the public!
What a beautiful way to celebrate Earth Day and support local ecosystems!
