Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is open again for public use on Mondays and Fridays (on Federal Holidays, the refuge will be closed to the public). The autumn deer, turkey and squirrel season at Big Oaks is now back on schedule. The deer hunt schedule (typically on weekends from now in October thru the fourth weekend in November) can be viewed on the refuge calendar link above or viewed on the deer hunt link on our home page. Tours of the refuge can be arranged by calling the refuge office 2 weeks in advance for a special group tour or attend one of the regularly scheduled tours. For further information about these events, call the refuge office at 812-273-0783.
A small trail with a photo blind is ready for wildlife photographers and nature lovers at Big Tree Point at Old Timbers Lake. Off trail hiking is also allowed in the northeast portion of the refuge known as the public use area.
All refuge visitors must view the safety briefing once per calendar year, and sign an acknowledgement of danger form. A daily pass to the refuge costs $3.00, an annual pass is $15.00 and hunt permits are $15.00. Holders of an interagency Access/Senior Pass would be charged a reduced rate. For information about how to obtain an Access/Senior Pass please call the refuge office.
